A tiger surrounded by flowers found in the jungles where it lives
All things are connected. Investigate a little further and you’ll find that the tiger, flowers, and all the other creatures and features of the environment where they live are connected. It may be an easily recognized connection or one driven by a myriad of finite connections. The majestic tiger is perhaps the most well-known of our endangered species. The idea of protecting them seems simple, but it’s elusive. We must balance the exponential growth of human populations and all the need and greed that is associated with it. Tigers are endangered because humans are destroying, encroaching and fragmenting the tiger’s habitat. We’re also hunting them. How to address this is a very complex question. How do we balance the needs of impoverished populations with protecting and reestablishing tiger habitat? Here are a few approaches. We can help governments that rule territories in their range build the capacity to protect them, write tiger protections into law and provide frameworks and funding to enforce those laws. We can reduce poaching and exotic pet trades. We can reduce tiger human conflicts. We can also study tigers to better understand their needs.
