Friends with Benefits- sold
48 x 80 acrylic on wood panel
A group of cardinals perch in a weeping white cherry tree. Cardinals and cherry trees have a mutualistic relationship. Cardinals eat the blossoms of cherry trees helping to thin out the blossoms so the remaining blooms can thrive. As cardinals eat the blossoms, their beaks become coated in pollen which is dispersed throughout the habitat. The pollen can then be picked up by the wind and carried to the vicinity of distant flowers helping to ensure cross pollination. Cardinals also augment their nutrition by eating protein rich bugs on cherry trees. This helps to keep insect populations on cherry trees in balance. Cherry trees and cardinals have a great system of exchange; they truly are friends with benefits.
