At 60 million years old, magnolias are the earliest flowering plants. They evolved before the bee and butterfly and to this day rely on a simpler process of pollination provided by beetles that feed on their protein rich pollen. Evergreen magnolias provide year-round shelter for songbirds and other small vertebrates. Goldfinches eat magnolia seeds and rely on the trees for shelter.
